STRETCH MARKS
Stretch mark is a type of cicatrix. Stretch marks are formed as a result of pregnancy, abrupt reducing of weight, long treatment with hormones, rapid growth during adulthood etc.
Reasons To Stretch Marks Formation:
Various reasons are there but from the histological and biochemical point of view, the problem is rupture of collagen fibres or sharp decline in collagen biosynthesis respectively. The skin is flexible and the flexibility is provided by the collagen present in the skin but even it has limits as to how far it can stretch. When the skin is stretched near its limits small cracks are formed and the underneath blood vessels are exposed. As a result, at the very beginning of stretch marks formation, those cracks look red. The tears are formed in the middle layer of the skin. As they heal, scar tissue is formed leaving a track of lighter coloured skin across an area of the body that is glossier than the rest of the skin.
Let’s see the structure and components of the skin and collagen.
Simple Chart Of Skin Layers
Detail Chart Of Skin Layers
The human skin consists of two layers; a superficial layer called the epidermis, an epithelial layer of ectodermal origin and a deeper layer called the dermis, a layer of connective tissue of mesodermal origin. Based on the comparative thickness of the epidermis, thick and thin skin can be distinguished. The dermis has a rich network of blood and lymph vessels. The dermis contains a network of fibres of the elastic system. The main types of proteins that make up the matrix include collagens, Elastin, fibronectin and laminin. Normal elastic fibre assembly is visualized as a spider web spanning the dermis. The elastic network is responsible for the elasticity of the skin. The resiliency of skin is maintained by elastic fibres in the extracellular matrix (ECM).
| Collagen Fibers |
A group of structural proteins that were modified by environmental influences during the process of evolution and the functional requirements of the animal organism developed to varying degrees of rigidity, elasticity, and strength. These proteins are collectively known as collagen. In human body it represents 30% of its dry weight. Collagen, the major component of most connective tissues provides an extracellular framework for all metazoan animals and exists in virtually every animal tissue. In human tissues at least 19 distinct types of collagen made up of 30 distinct polypeptide chains (each encoded by a separate gene) have been identified. Type I and Type III fibres are responsible for skin texture. Type I fibres are able to stretch considerably and shrink accordingly. Collagen type III is only a minor component of the collagen fibrils in the skin and are not so stretchable and also are easily disrupted. Type1 collagen fibres are mostly responsible for stretch marks formation.
The main structural component of the dermis is collagen. Bundles of collagen molecules pack together throughout the dermis. Collagen is responsible for the skin's strength. Collagen is produced by fibroblasts.

Skin collagen
and aging
Cellular proteins hook
together or change shape during aging.
Due to these changes, the proteins cannot function properly and that results in
loss of collagen and body tissues reduce their firmness. This process
eventually leads to wrinkles. Thus, one important target of wrinkle prevention
and elimination regimen is to reduce
collagen breakdown and increase its
supply.
With age,
collagen fibres thicken and collagen synthesis decreases. Elastic fibres
steadily increase in number and thickness, so the elastin content of human skin
increases approximately fivefold from foetal to adult life. In old age
extensive crosslinking of collagen fibres, the loss of elastic fibres, and
degeneration of these fibres caused by excessive exposure to sun (solar elastosis) cause the skin
to become more fragile, loss of suppleness, and develop wrinkles. In cutis
laxa and Ehlers-Danlos
syndrome, there is a considerable increase in skin and ligament
extensibility caused by defective collagen fibril processing.
A number of factors are involved
in the formation of new collagen such as healthy
food (protein deficiency results in new collagen reduction), environmental factor (climate,
radiation), harmful habits (alcohol,
smoking), vitamin C deficiency etc.
Stretchy skin of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)
1. Collagen fibres
2. Skin sagging and stretch mark
formation.
Normal collagens are highly stable molecules, having half-lives as long as several months. However, connective tissue is dynamic and is constantly being remodelled, often in response to growth or injury of the tissue. Breakdown of collagen fibrils is dependent on the proteolytic action of collagenases, which are part of a large family of matrix metalloproteinases.
Appearance of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks, also known as striae gravidarum, or `striae`,
are the lines (disfiguring skin color) that appear on the skin. Stretch marks
are formed due to breaking of the elastic layer of the epidermis. In the dermis
(the resilient layer that helps skin retain its shape), stretch marks are formed there. When this layer is being constantly
stretched over time, it breaks down and becomes less elastic. As a result, the
small connective fibres within it break. Striae may be of different forms and colours
such as opaque tiny lines, pink, reddish brown, dark brown, deep red lines etc.
During the pregnancy period, due to hormonal changes, the skin and ligaments
relax and stretch. The red lines can turn to silver during the postpartum
period. Stretch marks are found both in men and women but the pregnant women
are the most sufferers from this imperfection of skin due to ever increasing
stretching of the skin. Stretch marks may
occur on the breasts, the upper arms,
the buttocks, thighs and across the entire abdomen. Stretch marks may appear in patients after a breast augmentation or other cosmetic surgery procedures.
The pregnancy related stretch marks formation can be explained by the following ways. The uterus becomes enlarged for the foetal accommodation and the breasts develop under the hormonal influence. As a result, the skin will also stretch accordingly but certain women are not able to keep up with this rapid growth. The fibrous and elastic tissue in the skin is damaged and stretch marks form. As the stretching process increases, more scar tissue is accumulated and the stretch marks increase in width.

The dermatologists have stated that stretch marks are the result of an increased level of circulating glucocorticoids
throughout the bloodstream. The adrenal glands secrete glucocorticoid and
the secretion is elevated during pregnancy, adolescence, obesity, weight
lifting and Cushing's disease.
The glucocorticoids affect the dermis by preventing the fibroblasts from forming collagen and elastin fibres that are necessary for rapidly growing skin to keep it taut. This creates a lack of supportive material and as the skin is stretched, it leads to dermal tearing. Not only that, the epidermal cells are also affected and the epidermis becomes thin and flattened, allowing for more visibility of the underneath defects in the dermis.
Striae are
normally associated with obesity,
pregnancy and adolescent
growth. Several pathological conditions such as Cushing's, Marfan's and Ehlers-Danlos
syndromes, diabetes mellitus and long term use of topical and systemic steroids are also
responsible for the stretch mark formation. The recent studies on stretch marks
formation indicate that mRNA levels of
some important structural proteins in the skin such as collagens, elastin and
fibronectin are decreased.
Teenage Stretch Marks
During
adolescence period stretch marks can develop in
teenagers because of rapid growth spurts. As the teenagers attain
maximum development both in muscular and
skeletal growth including sexual characteristics, they are associated with
increased production of hormones such as
testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), human growth hormone (hGH) etc. during
puberty. Another cause of teenage stretch marks formation is the bodybuilding activities associated with rapid weight gain and muscular
growth. The stretchy
fibres in the dermis can tear when the skin is stretched over a short period
which results in the appearance of purplish colored stretch mark scars.
Generally greater amount of fat is deposited in those organs of our body such
as the abdomen, hips, breasts, upper arms,
buttocks and thighs which are mostly prone to stretch marks formation. Sometimes,
stretch marks may appear on the
shoulders and back in teenagers. Teenage boys and teenage girls tend to get stretch marks in different locations because of their different
hormonal influence in the respective target organs. Teenage boys
generally have stretch marks on their back and shoulders, buttocks
and thighs, and teenage girls tend to get them on the breasts, hips, and
thighs.
Factors Involved in Stretch Mark Formation
So many factors are there that contribute a
significant role in stretch mark formation. Some important factors are -
1. Changes
in Body Weight
Rapid growth during puberty
or weight gain during pregnancy, muscle building etc. contribute
significant role in stretch marks formation. When the skeletal and muscular
growths are faster than the skin, the
skin wouldn’t be able to keep up with it and epidermal tearing will occur and
as a consequence, stretch marks will
be formed.
2. Nutritional Deficiencies
Following vitamins and minerals play a role on
the overall health of our skin:
Vitamin
A
Vitamin A promotes the regeneration of skin
and aids in the repair of injured tissues. It increases the production of
collagen and thereby helps in maintenance of the elasticity of the skin.
Vitamin
C
Vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of
collagen, a key structural protein of the skin. Vitamin C is also an
antioxidant and can help reduce skin damage caused by free radicals. So,
vitamin C is essential to improve texture property of the skin and to reduce
wrinkles. It also helps in wound healing.
Vitamin
E
Vitamin E present in biological membrane, acts
as an antioxidant.
Zinc
Vitamin A along with the mineral Zinc produces collagen and
elastin.
3. Skin Type
In well hydrated skin, stretch marks are generally not formed or poorly developed as
it is more elastic than the dry skin.
People at a glance liable to stretch marks
formation
- fatty people
- pregnant women
- people in the adolescent period
- people on low-calories diet
- patients getting hormones
- people with frequent weight changing
- bodybuilders
- women in menopause period
Losing collagen and elastin in the skin
results in stretch
marks formation, loss of tone, fine lines and wrinkles. To get rid
of from stretch marks, stay well hydrated; moisturize your belly; eat a balanced and nutritious diet and try to avoid excessive or rapid weight gain.
There are several methods to
eliminate stretch marks
- Cream and Lotion
- Cosmetic surgery
As a whole most of the people
prefers to using cream and lotion, not only it is low cost to applying stretch
marks removal cream but also it has zero damage on skin.
Let’s talk about the benefit of
using a stretch mark removal cream.
- Low Cost
- No Side Effect
- Skin Improvement
Low Cost : Most of the stretch marks
removal creams are very low cost and can be found easily over internet. As you know
all the creams are not works efficiently. But still overall composition of the
